MARON was the Seilenos or rustic-god of Maroneia in Thrake, one of the finest wine-producing regions in the ancient world. He was also the charioteer of the god Dionysos. Maron first appears in Homer’s Odyssey as a priest of Apollon in Maronia who presented Odysseus with a batch of his fine wines. Euripides describes him a son of Dionysos and pupil of Seilenos. In late Hellenistic and Roman art he is often confounded with Seilenos, or else represented as one of three elderly gods in the retinue of Dionysos. The word marôn, from which his name was derived, means “whitish-grey,” an adjective used to describe the colour of an ass’s hide. Alternatively the name might simply mean “god of Maroneia.” This coin is circa 398/5-386/5 BC. The front features the forepart of horse to the left. The reverse side features a grape bunch and vine within dotted linear square.
